About the event!
Imagine a cool, breezy evening by the beach. The air carries a hint of salt and chill. You’re barefoot in the sand, your favorite drink in hand, and laughter rises over the sound of waves crashing nearby. Then comes the food — a tangy, peppery Mackerel fry, lightly dusted with cream of wheat and pan-fried until the exterior is perfectly crisp. The skin crackles with each bite, revealing tender, rich, oily flesh inside — full of depth, spice, and comfort. That’s how I spent most evenings with my friends on the beaches of Murudeshwar, a small coastal town that holds some of my dearest memories.
I was living there while pursuing my Diploma in Automobile Engineering, but truthfully, it was much more than a time of study — it was a time of discovery, of friendship, and of food. Those days remain some of the best of my life. The Konkan Coast wasn’t just my backdrop — it was a constant presence, shaping my palate and inspiring a love for flavors that has stayed with me ever since.
The coast sings in flavor: from the rich, vibrant color of Byadgi chili that infuses every fish curry with a deep, bold red, its flavor brings warmth and depth without overwhelming heat, to the lush creaminess of coconut milk that brings warmth and balance to every dish. Every meal was a celebration — simple, soulful, and deeply satisfying.
At a humble shack near campus, I first tasted that unforgettable Mackerel fry — crisp on the outside, meltingly soft inside, spiced to perfection. And then there’s the Malabar Parota — a flaky, layered flatbread loved across Kerala and the southern coast. With its crisp, golden edges and soft, pastry-like center, it was the perfect companion to every spicy, comforting curry we devoured by the sea.
At Ballads of the Konkan Coast, I’m bringing these stories and flavors to your plate — not just the food, but the memories that built my relationship with it. From earthy, pan-fried seafood and peppery stir-fries to the indulgent flakiness of Malabar Parota and the refreshing tang of buttermilk-based curries — every course is a story. Every bite, a moment lived.
If you’ve never been to the Konkan Coast, you're about to take that journey with me.
On May 17th Join me at my next SAMPURN supper club at the Private Chef’s Club in Little Italy for a 5-course dinner that celebrates the western coastline of India — its beaches, fishing villages, coastal flavors, and the memories of a young dreamer who once called it home.
